In this MAX G3 Plus commuter guide, I walk through what I would do before the first ride, how to pick a speed mode for your distance, the app settings I would change first, and the charging, parking and traffic habits that make daily riding easier.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Before Your First Commute<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Do these four things before you head out, and the first week goes a lot smoother.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Activate the scooter:<\/strong> until it is activated in the Segway Mobility app, it beeps when powered on and is limited to 9 mph. Scan the QR code on the dashboard, watch the riding safety video and tap to activate. It starts in DRIVE mode.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Check tire pressure:<\/strong> keep both tires at 42\u201348 psi. Underinflated tires wear faster, cut range and make the motor work harder.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Lock the stem:<\/strong> close the quick-release lever until you hear a click and the folding latch reaches the bottom. Segway measures range at each mode&#8217;s top speed and stops the test when speed drops to 60%, so these numbers reflect usable range for a 165-lb rider on flat pavement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table\"><table class=\"has-fixed-layout\"><thead><tr><th>Mode<\/th><th>Top speed<\/th><th>Rated range<\/th><\/tr><\/thead><tbody><tr><td>ECO<\/td><td>10 mph<\/td><td>Up to 56 miles<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>DRIVE<\/td><td>15 mph<\/td><td>Up to 36 miles<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>SPORT<\/td><td>20 mph<\/td><td>Up to 28 miles<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>SPORT+<\/td><td>28 mph*<\/td><td>Up to 22 miles<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Walk<\/td><td>3 mph<\/td><td>For walking the scooter<\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">*From the factory, the MAX G3 Plus tops out at 20 mph. Reaching 28 mph in SPORT+ requires enabling High Speed in the app, and is only for places where local law permits it. Some states cap scooter speed on public roads, so choose a mode that keeps you within the limit where you ride.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">My rule of thumb: look at your round trip, then pick the mode whose rated range leaves you a comfortable buffer, not the one that just barely covers it. Hills, headwinds, cold temperatures, a heavier load and low tire pressure all shorten range. The dashboard shows remaining mileage, and the battery icon turns red below 10%.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I go over the built-in charger in a later section, but it&#8217;s worth noting that you won&#8217;t need to carry a charging brick, so it&#8217;s easy to bring along if you need a mid-trip charge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">App Settings Worth Changing<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Segway Mobility app unlocks most of the MAX G3 Plus&#8217;s commuter features. These are the ones I would look at first.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Customize mode speed:<\/strong> lower the top speed of any mode to fit local rules or your comfort level.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Start speed:<\/strong> the motor engages once you are rolling at about 1.9 mph. You can adjust this to &#8220;zero start&#8221; mode, which enables you to engage the motor without having to kick it into gear. To prevent accidental accelerations, it&#8217;ll stay in park mode, but a simple squeeze on the brakes will release this safety mechanism at each stop.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Traction Control (TCS):<\/strong> helps reduce wheel slip on slick surfaces.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Energy Recovery:<\/strong> off by default. Set it to Standard or Weak to slow the scooter when you release the throttle. It assists the brakes but does not replace them, it does not engage in cruise control, and the dashboard does not show whether it is on.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Custom button:<\/strong> set to emergency flashers by default. You can assign a quick feature or a custom sound.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How to use cruise control<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Ride in ECO, DRIVE, SPORT or SPORT+ above 3 mph.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Press and hold the mode button for 2 seconds. The MAX G3 Plus has front and rear signals, and the underglow lights flash yellow with them. Hold either arrow for 2 seconds for emergency flashers.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Let the headlight work for you:<\/strong> press the power button to cycle the 6 W headlight through On, Auto and Off. Auto switches it on as the light fades.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Slow down for bumps:<\/strong> keep to about 3\u20136 mph over speed bumps and broken pavement, and avoid potholes.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Leave room to stop:<\/strong> braking distance grows with load and speed, so allow extra space when you are carrying heavier loads.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Follow local rules:<\/strong> do not ride on highways or other roads where scooters are not allowed, and do not carry passengers.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Charging at Home or Work<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The built-in charger is one of my favorite details for commuting: you only need the AC cable, so there is no power brick to carry. A full charge takes about 4 hours, or about 3 hours with a second charger (sold separately).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Scheduled charging:<\/strong> set a time window in the app, and the scooter starts charging automatically when you plug in. Squeeze a brake lever for 3 seconds to start right away.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Charging limit:<\/strong> set a maximum charge level in the app.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Cold days:<\/strong> if the scooter has been stored below 32\u00b0F, let it warm up above 41\u00b0F before charging.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Charge safely:<\/strong> use only the original charger, never charge when the port or cable is wet, and do not leave the scooter unattended while charging.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If the battery drops below 10% and the scooter sits unused for about 7 days, the battery goes to sleep. Set a digital or pattern passcode first as a backup.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Abnormal Movement Alert:<\/strong> if someone moves the scooter while it is off, it sounds an alarm and locks the drive wheel.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Apple Find My:<\/strong> pair the scooter to see its location in the Find My app. It helps you locate the scooter but is not an anti-theft system.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Storage:<\/strong> keep it in a cool, dry place out of direct sun and above 14\u00b0F.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How to fold and carry it<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Power off the scooter.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Lift the folding latch, open the quick-release lever, press it again and fold the stem.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Hook the snap hook onto the buckle at the rear of the deck.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Lift by the stem to carry. At about 56 lbs, get help on long stairs, and secure the scooter when it travels in a car.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Water Resistance and Daily Care<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The IPX6 scooter body and IPX7 battery help provide protection against wet conditions. Do not ride on slippery roads, submerge it or ride through deep water. The 11-inch self-sealing tires can seal small punctures up to 4 mm in diameter to get you to your next stop, but you&#8217;ll need to replace the tire afterward.
